Is your home ready for winter?

Last chance to make sure your home is ready for winter! Though temperatures have been mild, it’s wise to plan for the three coldest months ahead. By properly winterizing your home you can prevent costly damage and keep your family safe and warm all winter long.

Exterior

  • Clean all gutters and downspouts
  • Clean any underground drains that handle downspout water.
  • Make sure all water properly drains away from foundation
  • Visually inspect roofing shingles and exterior surfaces (siding, stucco, etc.) for missing materials or any areas that will allow for potential water infiltration
  • Re-caulk windows exterior doors
  • Replace old and damaged weather-stripping on door frames
  • Blow out lines for irrigation system
  • Remove hoses from hose bibs
  • Check and clean septic system

Interior

  • Replace all smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries
  • Check and clean fireplace chimneys

HVAC

A “Fall Start Check,” consisting of the following, should be performed on each unit of the HVAC system.

  • Check and replace air filters
  • Lubricate all pumps (hot water systems)
  • Check humidifier operation and replaceable parts
  • Clean away leaves and debris from outside units
  • Adjust dampers to favor northern, not southern, rooms

So simple, yet invaluable ... you can't afford to neglect these tips!

Think "Green" and Save Some Green

It’s been more than two years since the Federal Government introduced the Energy Policy Act (EPACT). Have you taken advantage of it? EPACT offers eligible consumers federal tax credits for purchasing energy-efficient appliances and products. Most of these tax credits remain through the end of the year, and are up again for evaluation in 2008. A tax credit is generally more valuable than an equivalent tax deduction because a tax credit reduces tax dollar-for-dollar, while a deduction only removes a percentage of the tax that is owed.

As a homeowner, you are able to itemize purchases on your federal income tax form, which will lower the total amount of tax you owe the government. Consumers who purchase and install specific products, such as energyefficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating and cooling equipment in their primary residence can receive a tax credit of up to $500. Wheaton is "Where It's At"

We’ve received a number of inquiries about two remarkable projects in Wheaton. The first is an incredible new construction project located on Schaffner Road. This house is described as a “Contemporary Craftsmen” by project team architect Christine Potts. Donatelli also played an integral role in the design process in terms of value engineering.

“The design required a huge footprint, four-car garage, soaring ceilings and a rear elevation affectionately referred to as the ‘house of gables’ by our carpenters,” said Chris Donatelli, president, Donatelli Builders, Inc., Inc. “We are proud of the fact that the owners had a very unique requirement for this project, and they hired Donatelli because we are not a cookie-cutter builder. They knew we could put the team together to pull it off.”

The second is an existing 60-year old Wheaton gem that had too much character for a tear down. This wholehouse renovation will ultimately have the best of both worlds. Architect and Wheaton resident Ron Haas made sure of that through the design process. If you have an appreciation for traditional architecture and quality workmanship, you need to look at this house. This project started in late October and we invite you to drive by and watch the progress. The home is located at the corner or Oak and Washington and will be completed by May 2008. We’ve included a current picture for you!

Favorite Features

The growing popularity of natural stone such as sleek and classic travertine or glistening Italian marble harkens back to ancient Rome when style was simplistic, yet breathtaking. While you can completely achieve that exquisite look and succumb to the great quality stone gives you today, your feet and hands shouldn’t have to succumb to the cold feeling it creates, especially in winter! At Donatelli, we love incorporating electric floor warmers into our clients’ homes. What are they?

Electric floor warmers

  • A thin mat installed before a tile or stone material runs up a thermostat
  • Used in specific rooms (baths, kitchens)
  • Keeps cold surfaces warm and comfortable
  • Even used for granite/stone kitchen islands to keep the area comfortable to the touch
  • Used year-round because air conditioning tends to make stone/tile surfaces cold
  • Evens the heat in rooms you want to be comfortable (master bathroom)
